What is
Live Edge Sessions?
I am inviting you to come experience Live Edge Recording Studio as it was intended: a retreat where you can listen to your own inner voice, collaborate, follow, or lead others on any part of this musical life journey. These are in-person connections at our wonderful new facility, but some remote collaboration is also possible. We’re at the very beginning of this endeavor, so for now it's a free offering, and there is no more plan or objective than to seek our joy and follow our hearts, turn a bit inward to listen... and hopefully find a beautiful creative path together. That being said, this is not a free jam session, but rather an opportunity to come develop your craft within a supportive community of other gifted creators at a facility designed to capture the spark of inspiration at the highest level of quality. Bring your ideas and desires, inspiration and struggle, talent and humility, and we’ll make some delicious delight from our many ingredients! We can do anything that feels fulfilling and productive. Bring your own music on which you’d like input or collaboration from other producers and artists, add to someone else’s project, join in a collaborative improvisational flow composing session seeking high level musical ideas and recordings, work on your studio craft and design recording setups, have an FX tweak out sesh, engineer tracking and mixing sessions, etc… All proposals welcome.
Not just for musicians
In an effort to help foster and ignite the creative spirit, Live Edge, including all technical studio spaces and comfy lounge areas, as well as our beautiful natural surroundings, can be used as creative space for writing, visual arts, meditation, body arts, and more. You can even ask to bring a friend or two that are not creators, as long as they contribute something to the project and at the very least bring fun, love, and supportive good vibes. Come with a plan, or plan to get lost together. Specific purpose is great but not required. My goal is that everyone leaves feeling more inwardly charged than when you arrived. If we succeed in that, undoubtedly some wonderful creations will manifest!
What’ll it cost me?
I am happy to be able to provide my space, equipment, time, and skills free of charge for this, and if anything more than good vibes and beauty come from our collaboration (you know, like fame and $$, haha!), I intend that we share all benefits in a fair and equitable manner, as mutually determined.
Why and when?
Live Edge Recording Studio construction is (functionally) complete. We’ve now had many successful client projects during our partial opening, and the first major projects (two full audiobooks and 4 albums) are wrapping up, so…
In a significant moment of transition to being fully open, and in memory of Charlie (my dog of 15 years), who was in some ways my deepest love and greatest teacher, and who just passed away…
Live Edge Sessions 2022 are starting immediately and running through January. If it picks up undeniable momentum, perhaps we'll go a bit longer, and hopefully this will become a recurring annual or semi-annual adventure with more notice and direction in the future. My ideal schedule (work dependent) will be 2 sessions per day: 1pm-5pm & midnight-4am on weekdays, with weekends as wildcards. If you would like longer, continuous sessions or a different time than those listed, you’re always welcome to inquire.
Who?
I welcome respectful, trustworthy, talented and experienced collaborators, who are good people willing to approach these sessions with an openness and intentional commitment to quality, creativity, and inclusiveness in whatever we do. It would be great to work 1 on 1 with you, but I also hope to gather a vibrant and dynamic group of artists and producers to work in groups together through these sessions. Please recommend anyone to me that you would like to work with or think might fit the bill.Once you Sign Up indicating your interest, you'll be added to the running official participants list, which will grow over time and may eventually be shared with all participants (pending your permission to share your name at the time of sharing). I will be curating and coordinating the participants and sessions to find times that work for people, while making an effort to make best use of our individual and collective strengths and create interesting combinations of skills. I also encourage you to make any requests for specific sessions and/or groupings of participants.I will try to make sure everyone who wants to participate can, but your and my availability and desire will ultimately determine the scope of your involvement in the sessions.
How do I sign up?
If you want in for the Live Edge Sessions 2022, I’m excited to have you on board!! Please Sign Up using the form below, and you can always Contact Me to discuss anything in more detail or schedule a standard paid studio session. I’m happy to try to accommodate and integrate last-minute requests (like same-day), if I can, but advance notice and scheduling ahead is preferred. Anything from a 1-on-1, 1-hour quickie to a 4-person, month-long deep dive are possible. Please do not come without confirming your time with me first.I ask that you take care of your own food and drink needs. There is delicious drinking water aplenty and a simple studio kitchenette in the lounge that is available for your use, including a sink, fridge, microwave, and toaster oven. I am a total omnivore and lover of good food, so any shared offerings are certainly encouraged, but not expected ;-)
What’s the setup?
I’ve built up a complex live flow setup. It’s designed to be a fairly static system that allows a continuous workflow (simultaneous or sequential) at any ‘station’ live, while yielding high quality recordings. In other words everything is mic’d up and piped in to the system, so we can just play. My setup (listed below), parts of which may be useable by others, is permanently in place during these sessions, and I also have plenty of additional mics, cables, inputs, and studio space left for integration of yours and/or others’ instruments and setups, so bring the gear you want.I know there’s a ton more knowledge and experience in this group than any one of us can possibly have alone, and I always appreciate any suggestions for improvements that can be made on my system or process at any point. My personal setup includes permanent ’stations’ for:
Keys:
-2 pianos, a Steinway baby grand & a honkeytonk upright grand
-Wurli
-chord parlor organ
-electric organ
-2 midi keyboardsGuitars:
-acoustic steel string
-Telecaster
-Schecter electric bass
-mandolin
-gourd banjoPercussion:
-djembe
-udu
-dumbek
-tambourine, shakers, clackers
-glockenspiel
-midi finger drum padsRoom and close mics:
-vocals
-saxes, flutes, concertina, erhu, etc…FX and Pedals:
-analog and digital FX pedals and plugins galore
-live looping capabilities on analog pedal or in the DAW with midi controller pedalAdditional:
-guest musician areas with plenty of ins, outs, mics, cables, DI's, stands, etc...
-guest visual artist areas with professional easel and drop cloth
-screen projection capability and many forms of photo and video cameras and capture devices for creative use
-professional RGB and White LED theater spotlights and RGB track lighting
-devoted livestreaming devices
-fully outfitted and tuned control room for all playback and mixing
-Ideally at some point we'll work out an integrated filming setup (the equipment and infrastructure are already in place for a multicam arrangement), so that live sessions can be easily captured on video as well as quality audio.
